Baltimore, MD Treatment for Autumn Eye Allergies

Although eye allergies are more commonly associated with springtime, just as many people endure symptoms during the fall as well. In addition to nasal symptoms such as sneezing and congestion, symptoms that affect the eyes can severely impede one's ability to function normally.

Symptoms of eye allergies include tearing, itchiness, swelling and burning. Vision can often be affected as well by blurriness or sensitivity to light. These symptoms can make it so uncomfortable for allergy sufferers that they interfere with work, school, sports and leisure activities.

For contact lens users eye allergies are sometimes exacerbated because contacts can often attract allergens. Further, when our eyes itch, our first reaction is to rub them which can result in even more irritation for those wearing contact lenses. Lens wearers experiencing ocular allergies often find themselves using rewetting drops more frequently or even reducing the use of their contacts or switching to eyeglasses. If you wear contacts and experience eye allergies, you may want to consider a different brand of contacts, particularly if you don't use daily disposables which reduce the potential for allergen accumulation. If you are experiencing problems from your contacts, schedule an appointment at our Baltimore, MD eye care practice to discuss your options.

For anyone suffering here are some tips to reduce autumn eye allergies:

  • Check the area pollen count and remain indoors when counts are high, particularly at peak times such as midday.
  • Wear large sunglasses to block allergens from entering your eyes.
  • Use a clothes dryer rather than hanging clothing out to dry whenever possible.
  • Clean floors with a damp mop rather than a broom which tends to stir up rather than get rid of allergens.
  • Refrigerate eye drops or use cold compresses for soothing irritation.
  • Reduce mold in your home by keeping humidity under 50% and using a dehumidifier if necessary.

While over the counter medications and eye drops can sometimes help relieve symptoms, a prescription medication may be what you need. In this case, make an appointment with your optometrist now to discuss your options and begin proper treatment. Our Baltimore, MD eye care office would be happy to assist you in regaining your comfort this fall!
