Contact Lenses and Makeup: Suggestions from your Baltimore, MD Eye Doctor

For those who use contacts there are a few guidelines that should be followed when it comes to the use of cosmetics. Below are a few pointers on how to ensure you keep your eyes beautiful and safe.

Buying Makeup

First and foremost, eye care professionals strongly suggest that you buy only brands that are free of oils and fragrances. Further, to prevent flaking and smearing, which could result in irritating your lenses, buy water-resistant mascara and eyeliner. Lastly it's important to replace makeup frequently - ideally replace mascara every month, eyeliner after 3 months and shadows after half a year.

How to Safely Apply Cosmetics

Make certain you wash your hands thoroughly before applying your lenses. Apply all eye makeup carefully so you won't jostle your contacts. Don't apply a brush or liner to the lid inside the lashes and start mascara at the midpoint of the lashes instead of the base. Don't use someone else’s makeup or put makeup on when the eyes are swollen or irritated.

In addition to taking off eye makeup daily try to be proactive and opt for glasses when you are aware you will be in contact with chemicals such as those used for dying hair or in a beauty salon.

Following these guidelines when applying eye makeup during contact lens use can prevent irritated, itchy or inflamed eyes and damage to lenses.

When your eyes are swollen or irritated don't apply any cosmetics around the eyes. Feel free to call your eye doctor if you experience any swelling, discomfort, or itchiness. Our Baltimore, MD optometrist can help you with any contact lens issues that are troubling you.
